The Maldives’ state broadcaster, Public Service Media (PSM), is under fire for allegedly editing a Quranic verse in a video of a reception held during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to Rasdhoo Island in Alifu Alifu Atoll on Sunday. Critics claim the edits were made to avoid linking the verse to the president amid growing accusations of lying, misleading supporters, and backtracking on campaign promises.

The reception began with the recitation of Surah Al-Hujurat, Ayah 6, which translates:
“O believers, if an evildoer brings you any news, verify it so you do not harm people unknowingly, becoming regretful for what you have done.”

The controversy arose when viewers noted that the Arabic word “فَاسِقٌۢ” (Fasiq), meaning “wicked person” or “evildoer,” was omitted in the edited version of the video shared on X, formerly Twitter. Critics allege this was a deliberate attempt to dissociate the verse’s implications from President Muizzu, who has recently been accused of misleading his supporters.

Following public outcry, PSM deleted the video and all related posts from its social media accounts. However, recordings of the original video continue to circulate online, with many accusing the broadcaster of altering the Quran – a grave offence in Islam.

Supporters of President Muizzu dismissed the allegations as a technical mistake.

The incident has sparked widespread anger, with commentators on social media emphasising that modifying Quranic text is considered an act of disbelief [kufr].

This marks the first time PSM has faced such a serious accusation, raising concerns about the integrity of the state broadcaster under the new administration. The silence from PSM on the matter has only fuelled further speculation and criticism.
