The Maldives Racing Association has expressed concern over President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s decision to revoke permits for racing and drifting following a fatal road accident in Hulhumalé.
In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, the association argued that the incident involving a sports car should not jeopardise the careers and futures of athletes involved in motorsport. The group stressed that racing in the Maldives is conducted legally and under strict guidelines, with 307 athletes participating in controlled events.
The Racing Association further highlighted its efforts to promote safe driving within the racing community and hold individuals accountable for any illegal activities.
The president’s decision to seize the area allocated for racing and implement stricter traffic rules comes after the death of a 23-year-old motorcyclist in an accident on Friday. The government has since introduced tougher measures to curb reckless driving.
