Reports from the Health Protection Agency (HPA) reveal an increase in the cases of the four most common infectious diseases in March compared to February this year. The reported diseases include diarrhea, common cold, viral fever, and dengue fever.
In March, there were 119 reported cases of dengue fever, an increase from 116 cases in February. Common cold cases also rose sharply to 33,637 last month from 29,184 in the previous month. Viral fever saw a significant jump, with cases rising from 8,871 in February to 11,760 in March. Cases of gastroenteritis also increased slightly, with 5,428 instances in March compared to 5,149 in February.
Despite these increases, the overall visitation rate to doctors for these conditions remained higher in March than in February. The HPA has noted an upsurge in the regular occurrence of common colds across various atolls, including Haa Alif, Haa Dhaalu, Noonu, Kaafu, Gaafu Dhaalu, Laamu, Gnaviyani, and Seenu, which have also reported several cases of dengue fever.
In light of these findings, the HPA stresses the importance of preventive measures to safeguard against diseases such as Covid-19 and influenza. Recommended practices include covering the mouth and nose during coughing and sneezing, maintaining high standards of cleanliness, and ensuring ample rest for those affected by dengue fever to facilitate recovery and prevent the spread of the virus.
Additionally, this year has seen 850 individuals tested for influenza, with 125 testing positive, underscoring the need for continued vigilance and preventive health practices.
