Mohamed Saeed has resigned as Managing Director of Public Service Media (PSM) nearly four months after his appointment.
Saeed, who previously served as Permanent Secretary of the Education Ministry, took over as the head of the state broadcaster on 24 August following the resignation of Zeena Zaheer, who was the first to hold the position under the new government. According to a source close to Saeed, his resignation was due to health reasons.
Saeed’s resignation follows a series of mishaps at PSM, with the broadcaster recently embroiled in two high-profile incidents. The first involved the omission of a word from a Quranic verse during a live broadcast, which led to widespread criticism. The incident, which according to the broadcaster occurred during a live signal switch between control rooms, was attributed to negligence. Several employees were suspended, and PSM issued a public apology. An investigation into the matter is ongoing.
The second issue arose when PSM aired an indecent scene during an English news segment last Tuesday. In response, the broadcaster apologised and suspended two employees. PSM described the incident as a serious breach of its content and editorial policies and announced a revision of its standard operating procedures to prevent further occurrences.
