State Minister for Tourism Mohamed Nihad has been suspended following his controversial remarks accusing the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) of plotting a terrorist attack on international-brand resorts near Malé. The government has not provided details about the suspension or clarified whether it is linked to his allegations.
Nihad’s comments, made during a rally organised by the ruling Progressive National Congress (PNC) on Monday, drew widespread criticism. He claimed that the MDP, in collaboration with the Labour Union, was planning an attack targeting three resorts as part of an effort to undermine the government’s goal of attracting two million tourists this year.
The MDP strongly condemned the allegations, calling them baseless and politically motivated. In a statement on Tuesday, the party urged authorities to investigate Nihad’s claims, describing them as “irresponsible” and damaging to the Maldives’ tourism sector, which forms the backbone of the country’s economy.
“These allegations are serious and irresponsible, especially coming from a state minister of tourism,” the MDP said. “We call on relevant agencies to take these remarks seriously and ensure the safety and security of tourists, industry employees, and businesses serving the sector.”
The Labour Union also denied the accusations, reiterating its focus on protecting workers’ rights.
Critics warned that such claims could harm the Maldives’ reputation as a premier tourist destination. The tourism industry has faced financial challenges this year, and stakeholders have cautioned that rhetoric like Nihad’s could further discourage travellers.
Nihad, a former member of parliament for the MDP, joined the PNC after being appointed to his state minister role.
The government has not issued an official statement regarding the suspension, leaving the terms and duration unclear.
Observers have called for transparency on the matter, urging the administration to prioritise safeguarding the tourism industry while addressing the allegations.
