The widely followed pseudonymous X account @HKurusee was suspended on Monday, prompting public outcry and a social media campaign urging its reinstatement.
The hashtag #BringBackHKurusee quickly began trending in the Maldives, underscoring the account’s influence in local political discourse. With over 40,000 followers, the account gained prominence for its role in shaping narratives during the recent presidential and parliamentary elections.
Known for exposing alleged corruption and criticising political figures, the account has faced repeated legal scrutiny and suspension efforts. Supporters allege the latest suspension resulted from mass reporting campaigns by government affiliates and critics.
The current administration, led by President Mohamed Muizzu, has reportedly made efforts to uncover the identity of the account’s operator, raising concerns among its followers about the implications for freedom of expression.
This marks the longest period @HKurusee has remained inactive following previous suspensions. Frustrated supporters claim the move undermines transparency and stifles dissenting voices in the country.
Critics of the account have accused it of spreading disinformation, while its defenders argue it serves as a whistleblower exposing corruption.
Neither X nor the Maldivian government has commented on the suspension.
