Resurfacing work on the entrance road to Velana International Airport (VIA) is currently underway, with night-time lane closures in effect until Sunday, 7 July, the Maldives Airports Company Ltd. (MACL) has announced.

The work is being carried out in four phases and takes place nightly from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., according to a press release issued by MACL on Wednesday.

Estate Security Service personnel are on-site to manage traffic and ensure safety. Signage, lane markings, and barriers have been installed to guide drivers through the affected areas.

“We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause, as the safety of airport users remains our top priority,” the company stated.

The resurfacing work comes as part of MACL’s broader preparations ahead of the highly anticipated opening of VIA’s new passenger terminal, scheduled for 26 July to mark the 60th anniversary of Maldivian independence.

MACL Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef launched the official countdown to the terminal opening during a ceremony held at the airport last month. The new facility is projected to handle up to 7.5 million passengers annually and will fully replace the existing terminal within three months of opening.

Finishing works are being finalised with funding support totalling US$180 million from the Saudi Fund and the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development. The total cost of the new terminal project has now exceeded US$450 million.
