The Supreme Council for Fatwa has ruled that it is permissible in Islam to dye hair black, clarifying a long-standing debate among religious scholars.

Although the decision was issued in February last year, it was made public on Wednesday.

The Council said in a fatwa there are two main scholarly views on the use of black hair dye — one permitting it and the other forbidding it — both based on valid religious evidence and derived through Ijtihad, or independent legal reasoning in Islamic jurisprudence.

However, the Council said the evidence favouring its permissibility was stronger and concluded that dyeing hair black is allowed.
