The foreign policy of the Mohamed Muizzu administration is centred around securing respect for the independence and sovereignty of the Maldives, Minister of Foreign Affairs Moosa Zameer has stated. He was speaking at an event commemorating the Golden Jubilee of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Australia. The Australian High Commissioner David Jessup also attended the event.
Zameer, in his address, underscored that President Muizzu’s foreign policy is designed to augment the relevance of the Maldives on the global stage and foster its economic and political resilience. “We are hence ready to cultivate and further strengthen all such mutually beneficial partnerships,” he said.
Expressing his gratitude to High Commissioner Jessup and the Australian government for the invitation to the event, Zameer emphasised that this milestone symbolises half a century of steadfast friendship. This enduring bond between the two countries, he noted, is marked by mutual respect and trust.
“Over the years, the Maldives and Australia have nurtured a strong partnership rooted in shared perspectives and a dedication to fostering peace and prosperity in the Indian Ocean region,” Zameer said.
Australia’s unwavering support has been instrumental in driving the socio-economic progress of the Maldives, he noted, adding that the commitment to human resource development through annual scholarships under the Australian Awards programme has empowered numerous Maldivians.
These students, equipped with knowledge and skills acquired from Australia, have emerged as catalysts for positive change, contributing significantly to the development of the Maldives, the minister added. As the Maldives commemorates the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties, Minister Zameer also affirmed its commitment to further strengthening the bonds of friendship with Australia.
The vision, he added, is one of continued close engagement, where both nations can build upon the foundations laid over the past 50 years and embark on a journey towards shared successes and collaborative achievements. The Maldives and Australia established diplomatic relations on 25 January 1974. A high commission of Australia was established in the Maldives for the first time in May 2023.
