The Tourism Employees Association of Maldives (TEAM) has endorsed incumbent Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s presidential run, saying that the Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) government, led by Solih, had protected the rights of tourism workers like no other has in the past.

In a statement released on Saturday, the TEAM said President Solih had worked with international organisations to promote the industry, implemented the minimum wage thereby lifting salaries of resort employees, and made it a requirement for resorts to pay employees a 10 percent service charge while also establishing a robust compliance monitoring mechanism.

The organisation also noted that, under the MDP government, the law had been amended to prevent dismissals without cause and further protect other employee rights.

Solih has promised to launch a specific housing scheme for resort employees should he win a second term in office, the TEAM statement said.
