The Commonwealth Games Federation’s (CGF) Oceania and Asia Regional Meeting opened on Sunday at SAii Lagoon, Crossroads, Maldives, bringing together representatives from 22 countries. It was inaugurated by the President of the Maldives Olympic Committee, Mohamed Abdul Sattar.
This marked the first time the meeting, which concludes on Tuesday, has been held in the Maldives and in Asia.
“This is the biggest such sports meeting to be held in the Maldives,” Sattar confirmed.
While speaking at the inauguration, the Maldives’ Minister of Sports, Fitness, and Recreation, Abdullah Rafiu, thanked the President of the CGF, Chris Jenkins, for hosting such a major Commonwealth meeting in the country. He acknowledged that the meeting would also help further strengthen relations with other nations and create broader opportunities for the Maldives.
“We will also build strong ties with our neighbouring countries in the field of sports,” he said.
Jenkins said the meeting would facilitate an exchange in ideas on how the Commonwealth Games Federation should move forward.
