The Elections Commission (EC) has said that legal action will be taken against those who violate election law during Sunday’s parliamentary elections.
Speaking to local media, EC member Hassan Zakariyya said that if anyone is found engaging in any illegal action during the election, the matter will be forwarded to the authorities for proper legal action.
Zakariyya emphasised that, especially at polling stations, legal action would be taken against activities such as recording video, using cell phones, and damaging polling equipment, thereby violating the Election Act.
“Those who commit illegal acts will not be let off. Legal action will be taken against them and they will be prosecuted,” Zakariyya said.
The EC member also highlighted that those who had engaged in such illegal actions in the past, such as damaging vote-boxes and capturing images where such actions are prohibited by law, have been referred to the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) for prosecution.
Voting to elect members to 93 constituencies will proceed in the Maldives from 8:00 am to 5:30 pm on Sunday.
