Hassan Zakariyya has been appointed a member of the Elections Commission (EC).
A vacancy in the five-member commission arose following the conclusion of Ismail Habeeb’s second term on 12 March. The law stipulates that a member can only serve two terms on the commission.
President Mohamed Muizzu appointed Zakariyya to the commission and formally presented him with the letter of appointment in a ceremony at the President’s Office on Monday.
Prior to his new appointment, Zakariyya was the Secretary General of the EC, a role he assumed in 2021. The Parliament confirmed Zakariyya’s nomination on 1 April.
