The Maldives Meteorological Service has issued a White Alert as severe weather conditions persist in various parts of the country, raising concerns for travellers embarking on journeys to different islands to celebrate the Eid holiday. Heavy rain, thunderstorms, strong winds, and rough seas are predicted, prompting holidaymakers to exercise caution and closely monitor the evolving weather conditions.
The White Alert, in effect from 07:00 to 12:00 today, emphasises the potential dangers posed by the prevailing weather system. The sea route from Haa Alifu Atoll to Meemu Atoll is particularly susceptible to adverse conditions, including heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, strong winds blowing at speeds ranging from 19 to 24 mph, with gusts reaching up to 40 mph, and rough seas.
Given the significance of the Eid holidays and the expected influx of travellers to various islands, authorities are implementing proactive measures to ensure the safety of the general public.
Travellers are strongly urged to exercise caution and make informed decisions regarding their travel plans. It is recommended to stay updated on transportation schedules, consult with relevant authorities or travel operators, and consider alternative arrangements if necessary.
