Members of the Elections Commission met with Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives Kong Xianhua to discuss electoral cooperation and strengthening democratic processes, the commission said Wednesday.
The meeting took place at the Chinese Embassy in Malé and was led by Elections Commission President Mohamed Zahid, according to a post on the commission’s official X account.
Discussions focused on enhancing collaboration in electoral matters, building the capacity of the commission, and promoting democratic principles, the post said. No further details were disclosed. The Chinese Embassy has not issued a statement on the meeting.

The meeting comes as the Elections Commission continues preparations for the upcoming local council elections.
Last month, the commission also met with US Ambassador to the Maldives Hugo Yon and UK High Commissioner Nick Low. The EC made similar statements following those meetings.
