Two men, aged 18 and 19, have been remanded into five-day custody after being arrested for burglarising a DHL delivery van in Malé City. According to police reports, the robbery was carried out by a group of masked men, with the suspects entering the van on two separate occasions to steal packages.
The Criminal Court revealed that one of the suspects had a previous arrest record, although this is his first charge in a robbery case. The criminal history of the second suspect remains undisclosed.
As part of the investigation, police submitted statements from the DHL van driver and CCTV footage from nearby streets. Despite the recovery of one of the two stolen package, its contents were missing.
This incident contributes to the rising trend of theft and burglary, which were the most reported crimes last year. In the third quarter of 2023, 2,441 burglary cases were reported, leading to the investigation of 1,121 cases. Out of these, investigations were concluded for 760, but charges were pursued in only 26 cases. In total, 276 suspects were detained in relation to theft and burglary offences.
