Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has called on all Maldivians to hold state institutions and companies accountable.
Speaking at a rally held by the People’s National Front (PNF) on Thursday, Yameen said the heads of institutions and companies should honour their oaths to dutifully fulfil their responsibilities.
People are disenfranchised when they have to take to the streets every time, however they would do so to put the institutions back on track, he said.
“But people should gather there, which is within the rights of the people, to see why the Anti-Corruption Commission is not looking into such cases. Stelco is cheating the people with their electricity bills,” Yameen said, noting that state-owned enterprises such as Stelco, Housing Development Corporation (HDC), and Fenaka have been neglectful in their duties to provide services to the people.
“Institutions are not functioning. No institution is functioning. No institution is being run [properly]. Everyone says they might lose their jobs. That is not what they have been appointed to do. They have been given the responsibilities which come with the job to fulfil those responsibilities,” Yameen said.
According to the former President, politicians are making the excuse that the Maldives is a fledgling democracy. However, it is not our democracy that is fledgling but rather the human mind, he said alluding to the immaturity of Maldivian politicians.
He also said that those in positions, such as the Prosecutor General, should report corruption to the police and the Anti-Corruption Commission for investigation.
