A Sri Lankan excavator operator accused of causing the death of a foreign worker at Thilafushi was remanded for seven days by the Criminal Court on Monday.

The remand followed the submission of evidence related to the allegation, including an incident report and CCTV footage. The order said the worker died after being struck by an excavator and that the operator acted without due care, according to the investigating officer.

The operator was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter as the investigation continues.

Amin Mia, a 24-year-old Bangladeshi national, was killed on Monday while working at the Waste Management Corporation Limited site on Thilafushi island.

An official said Amin was struck by the bucket of an excavator while waste handling continued. He fell into a pile of waste and was later moved with the material to another location, where he was buried. Authorities are assessing whether the operator knew Amin had been hit at the time.

CCTV footage reviewed by investigators shows the excavator striking Amin while work at the site continued. Amin was reported missing on Tuesday, and his body was recovered on Wednesday.
