Mufawiz Hashim (Mufa) has resigned from his position on the Executive Committee of the Football Association of Maldives (FAM). Mufawiz, who had vied for the presidency in the elections initially slated for 31 January, confirmed his departure, citing personal reasons for his decision.

This resignation comes at a tumultuous time for FAM, as the organisation has been grappling with challenges related to its election process. FIFA intervened to halt the electoral activities due to the absence of necessary committees, prompting FAM to reconstitute these bodies in an effort to proceed with the elections.

The backdrop of these events includes a legal cloud hanging over the incumbent FAM President Bassam Adeel Jaleel. The Prosecutor General’s Office has charged Bassam with embezzlement and money laundering, allegations linked to the misappropriation of funds from FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation. Despite these accusations, Bassam has maintained his innocence.

As the FAM presses ahead with the restructuring and legal examination, all eyes are on the upcoming election. President Bassam Adeel Jaleel, who is reportedly contemplating seeking a third term, has not confirmed his candidacy.
