Former Vice President of the Election Commission, Ismail Habeeb, has been appointed to the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM).

Habeeb was sworn in at a special ceremony held at the President’s Office on Sunday. The oath was administered by Supreme Court Justice Ali Rasheed Hussain, with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu presenting the official letter of appointment.

The Parliament had approved Habeeb’s appointment in July, with the support of 74 members. Three members from the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) voted against his appointment.

Dr Adham Abdullah’s resignation last October had left a vacant position in the HRCM, leading to Habeeb’s nomination and eventual approval for the post.
