The Maldivian government has condemned Israel’s decision to approve the expansion of illegal settlements in the occupied Syrian Golan, calling it a “blatant violation of international law” and United Nations resolutions.

In a statement issued on Monday, the government criticised the move, emphasising that it undermines ongoing efforts to achieve peace in the region. “This decision marks a blatant violation of international law, relevant United Nations Security Council and General Assembly resolutions, and further undermines ongoing efforts towards peace in the region,” the statement read.

The government urged the international community to take “immediate and decisive action” to pressure Israel into halting its illegal settlement activities and ending its aggression in the occupied Syrian territories. “The Syrian Golan has been occupied since 1967. [We] urge Israel to adhere to the relevant United Nations resolutions, including Security Council resolution 497 (1981),” the statement said.

Resolution 497, adopted unanimously by the UN Security Council in 1981, declared Israel’s annexation of the Golan Heights as “null and void” and without international legal effect.

The Maldives further reiterated its principled support for Syria’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity. “The Government of Maldives supports all regional and international efforts aimed at restoring peace, security, and stability in Syria, while ensuring the aspirations of its people are realised,” the statement said.
