The Maldives is an example to the world in the field of sustainable tourism, Minister of Tourism Ibrahim Faisal said while speaking at the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC)’s ‘Maldives Media Meet’ during the ITB China Fair.
The Maldives is participating as the ‘Official Destination Partner’ at ITB China, which takes place at the Shanghai World Expo and Exhibition Center from 29-27 May.
Speaking at a press conference held during the fair, Faisal said that the administration gives special priority to sustaining and promoting tourism in the Maldives and that nation was now considered an example to the world in the field of sustainable tourism.
The minister said the impact of global health disasters and economic shocks on the tourism sector should be mitigated and that the administration was working to facilitate access to loans in the tourism sector — highlighting that loans at low interest rates will be facilitated with the newly established Development Bank of Maldives (DBM).
During the conference, an MoU was signed between MMPRC and Weixin Pay, also known as WeChat Pay, to establish a digital payment network between the Maldives and China.
MMPRC believes that the agreement with Weixin Pay will increase the number of Chinese tourists coming to the Maldives and make it a leading destination for Chinese tourists.
MMPRC said the Maldives Media Meet was an opportunity to promote the Maldives’ tourism in the Chinese market through global media focus and to showcase the Maldives as one of the most popular destinations in the world.
