The Maldives’ top diplomat, Moosa Zameer, met with Saudi counterpart Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah bin Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud on Monday. Foreign Minister Zameer is currently on an official visit to Saudi Arabia.

According to a statement by the Maldives’ Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), Zameer, during the meeting, presented a letter from President Mohamed Muizzu, to Prince Faisal, addressed to Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud.

The meeting focused on further strengthening bilateral relations through economic and international cooperation, the Foreign Ministry said.

In addition, Zameer thanked the Saudi government for their assistance to the Maldives, expressing his hope that the visit would further strengthen ties between the two countries, the MFA statement said.

Zameer, accompanied by a high-level Maldivian delegation, arrived in Saudi Arabia after a visit to Bahrain where he met with the nation’s leaders as well as shareholders of Batelco. Batelco, Bahrain’s principal telecommunications company, is the majority shareholder of Maldives’ telecoms giant Dhiraagu. Zameer, during his visit to Bahrain, as with his visit to China late last month, presented the nation’s leadership with a letter from President Muizzu.

The President’s Office has yet to comment on the contents of the letters presented by the Foreign Minister to the leaders of the nations, most of which have a long standing history of providing aid—including developmental, financial and grant aid—to the Maldives.

Zameer is set to meet with other senior officials of the Saudi government as well as the Saudi Fund for Development. He is further scheduled to meet with Maldivians currently resident in Riyadh.
