Renewable energy-powered micro-grid seawater desalination plants established across five islands in the Maldives with Chinese grant aid have been handed over to the Maldives government.
The Chinese grant aid project, at a total cost of MVR 199 million and initiated during Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s visit to Maldives in 2022, established one plant per island across the country as follows;
Atoll (Abbreviation) | Island |
Raa (R) | Alifushi |
Haa Aflifu (HA) | Kela |
Lhaviyani (Lh) | Olhuvelifushi |
Kaafu (K) | Kaashidhoo |
Gaafu Alifu (GA) | Dhaandhoo |
Each plant can produce 200 tonnes of water per day, utilising power harnessed from their 200 kW solar panels. In addition, the plant at K. Kaashidhoo also features a 100 kW wind turbine.
Minister of Construction and Infrastructure Abdulla Muththalib signed the document, accepting the desalination plants, on behalf of the Maldives, at a ceremony held on Wednesday. Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives Wang Lixin signed on behalf of the Chinese government.
