The Maldives on Monday exchanged key agreements, memoranda of understanding (MoUs), and exchanges of notes (EONs) with Malaysia, aimed at strengthening cooperation across a range of sectors including sport, health, tourism and diplomacy.
The agreements were signed during the ongoing official visit by President Mohamed Muizzu, underscoring efforts by both countries to deepen their longstanding relationship.
Foreign Minister Abdulla Khaleel signed two MoUs — one with Malaysian Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh to boost collaboration between sports organisations, promote sporting events, enhance athlete training, and support anti-doping initiatives; and another with Malaysian Health Minister Dzulkefly Ahmad to advance human resource development, health service delivery, medical tourism and health technology.
Maldivian High Commissioner to Malaysia Mariyam Shabeena Ahmed also signed two MoUs, including one with Malaysia’s Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan to strengthen tourism cooperation. The agreement targets joint marketing efforts, the promotion of Muslim-friendly tourism, and the development of eco-tourism and cultural attractions.
In the diplomatic field, two exchanges of notes were carried out between High Commissioner Shabeena and Malaysia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Mohamed Alamin. One agreement establishes collaboration between the Maldives’ Foreign Service Institute and Malaysia’s Institute of Diplomacy and Foreign Relations. The other sets up a bilateral consultation mechanism to strengthen political, economic and social ties, and to coordinate positions on regional and international issues.
The President’s Office said the MoUs and EONs are expected to further bolster the multifaceted relationship between the Maldives and Malaysia.
