Contributions to the Maldives’ Zakat House have been used to facilitate the provision of much-needed clean drinking water in Gaza, it has been revealed.

Aid from Zakat House was delivered to Gaza through the Qatar Red Crescent, with the Qatar Red Crescent then facilitating the provision of 6,000 cases of water to patients at Al Shifa and Al Hayat hospitals in Gaza.

The aid will facilitate the distribution of a total of 50,000 cases of water to Gazans in need. According to the Qatar Red Crescent, this contribution will aid approximately 60,000 people in Gaza.

“With funding from @ZakatHouseMv [Maldives Zakat House], Water Supply project launched in Gaza by #QRCS [Qatar Red Crescent] field personnel, with 6,000 bottled water boxes distributed to injured & patients at Al-Shifa and Al-Hayat Hospitals, out of 50,000 water boxes to be distributed to 60,000 underserved people,” the Qatar Red Crescent confirmed in a post to social media on 17 December.

Minister of Islamic Affairs Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed said on Tuesday that the aid from Zakat House had reached the people of Gaza.

“The aid from Maldives Zakat House has reached our dear brothers and sisters of Gaza. Aid is spent to provide drinking water to brothers and sisters in need. This is being implemented through the Qatar Red Crescent,” Shaheem said in a post to social media.

Zakat House announced the decision to donate US$100,000 in aid to serve the Palestinian people on 27 November.

The government has also launched a fundraising campaign.
