Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a ceremonial welcome in the Maldives on Friday as he began a two-day state visit aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and signalling a thaw in relations between the two neighbours.
President Mohamed Muizzu formally welcomed Modi at Republic Square in Male’, where a cultural performance by Aminiya School students was followed by a 21-gun salute, the playing of national anthems, and a Guard of Honour by the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF). The two leaders then introduced members of their respective delegations.

Modi arrived earlier in the day at Velana International Airport, where he was received by Muizzu. It is Modi’s first visit to the Maldives since Muizzu, who took office in 2023, came to power and his first overseas trip in his third term as prime minister.
“This visit carries profound significance,” the President’s Office said, highlighting that it coincides with the 60th anniversary of the country’s independence and the establishment of diplomatic ties between India and the Maldives.
The two leaders are expected to hold official talks focusing on regional and bilateral issues. A number of Memoranda of Understanding and cooperation agreements across various sectors are expected to be signed. Modi and Muizzu are also scheduled to inaugurate several joint projects and deliver joint press statements on the outcomes of their discussions.
The visit comes as both sides work to repair ties that became strained after Muizzu, viewed as favouring closer relations with China, called for the withdrawal of Indian military personnel stationed in the Maldives. President Muizzu, who rose to power on the back of the “India Out” movement, had made the removal of Indian troops a key campaign pledge. India has since removed its troops, and both governments have signalled a willingness to re-engage.
Modi’s visit is seen as a crucial step in resetting relations and reinforcing regional security cooperation.
