President Mohamed Muizzu has congratulated the Republican Party candidate for President of the United States of America, Donald John Trump, on his projected election win.
“Warm congratulations to President-elect @realDonaldTrump [Trump] on your electoral victory. The Maldives and the United States share a strong partnership based on mutual respect, goodwill, and understanding. I look forward to strengthening our cooperation, address[ing] mutual challenges and work[ing] towards advancing global peace and prosperity,” Muizzu said, posting on social media.
Trump, who had required 270 electoral votes to become the 47th President of the US, is currently projected to earn 277 electoral votes. The Democratic Party’s candidate for President, Kamala Devi Harris, is expected to gain 224 electoral votes — Harris is the current Vice President and replaced incumbent President Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. when the latter relinquished his presidential candidacy and endorsed Harris as the new nominee for the Democratic Party.
In contrast to Trump’s previous win, when he was voted in as the 45th President of the US, he is also currently ahead in the popular vote with 51 percent — Harris has 47 percent.
While several leading news organisations have called the election for Trump, with the Republican candidate also claiming victory, Harris, with votes still being counted, has yet to concede.
Several heads of states and governments have congratulated Trump on his victory at the polls.
