President Mohamed Muizzu left for the United Kingdom on Tuesday to attend high-level meetings and engagements aimed at strengthening ties between the two nations, the President’s Office said.

Muizzu, who is accompanied by a senior delegation, will take part in discussions focusing on “governance, climate and environmental issues, as well as enhancing cooperation in trade, investment, and education”, according to a statement released by his office.

The president is also scheduled to attend a business forum in London as part of the visit, which comes as the Maldives and the UK mark 60 years of diplomatic relations. Ties between the two countries were first established on 26 July 1965.

“This visit is expected to further reinforce the long-standing relationship and cooperation between the Maldives and the United Kingdom, underpinned by mutual respect and trust,” the statement said.

No further details of the meetings or schedule were immediately disclosed.
