Police have seized a stash of weapons in a search operation conducted in connection with the recent gang violence in Addu City. The weapons were found in an area used by gang members as a hangout, the agency said.

“During the operation, while searching areas where gangs gather in Hithadhoo, police recovered sharp weapons, iron bars, and other items believed to have been readied for use in fights,” the police said.

Ten individuals have thus far been arrested and charged with assault after two people were stabbed in clashes between two rival gangs in Addu City. Those in custody include, according to the Police, an 18-year-old, two 19-year-olds, three 20-year-olds, a 21-year-old, and three 23-year-olds.

The Hithadhoo Magistrate’s Court has remanded all 10 suspects into custody pending the conclusion of their trials.
