The Parliament Public Accounts Committee has recommended that the President remove Ali Hashim as the Governor of the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA).
The Committee approved the recommendation to President Mohamed Muizzu to remove Governor Hashim on Monday, citing their belief that the nation’s economy has deteriorated due to his failure to fulfill his responsibilities.
The Deputy-Speaker of the Parliament, Ahmed Nazim, who proposed the motion, said that the MMA was not conducting monetary policy properly, leading to the nation’s economy deteriorating to a point where recovery is difficult.
Under the Maldives Monetary Authority Act, Parliament can recommend the President remove the Governor of the central bank. The committee will study the matter and submit it for a vote, the body said, explaining that they will consider the issue and give the governor an opportunity to answer.
