Six parties have expressed interest in the Uligan Marina Project, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at Maldives Ports Limited (MPL), Mohamed Wajeeh, Ibrahim has confirmed. Ibrahim was speaking at the inauguration of the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) gate at Uligam Island, in Haa Alifu (HA.) Atoll on Thursday.

According to the CEO, all six applicants were foreign companies.

“Hopefully, we will hand it over to one soon,” Ibrahim explained.

According to MPL, the project will consist of six main phases which include a yacht marina, cruise terminal, vessel docking facility, Uligan port facility, city hotel, as well as a café and restaurant.

Interested parties are required to develop a yacht marina and project requirements also specify that development has to be carried out in one or two additional phases depending on the developer’s approach.

MPL says the project will create significant job opportunities and bring positive economic changes to the northern region.

The project is aimed at providing services to cargo ships, safari boats, and yachts travelling the northernmost region of the Maldives, and it aims to become a premier destination for such vessels.

The project is an important cornerstone of President Mohamed Muizzu’s economic policies to end the country’s dependence on tourism alone.
