Police have arrested a Sri Lankan excavator operator in connection with the death of a foreign worker at the Thilafushi waste management site.

The arrest relates to the death of Amin Mia, a 24-year-old Bangladeshi national, who died on Monday while working at the Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) site on Thilafushi island.

An official said Amin was struck by the bucket of an excavator while waste was being handled at a waste aggregation site. He fell into a pile of waste and was later moved and “buried” with the material at another location.

Authorities said it remains unclear whether the operator was aware that Amin had been hit at the time.

CCTV footage, an official said, shows the excavator striking Amin while work at the site continued uninterrupted.

Amin was reported missing on Tuesday. His body was recovered on Wednesday.

Police said the investigation is ongoing.
