A Sri Lankan man has died following a motorcycle accident on the Malé-Hulhumalé highway early Saturday morning. The foreign national succumbed to his injuries after being transferred to ADK Hospital in Malé for further treatement, according to the Maldives Police Service (MPS).

The accident occurred approximately at 6:40 a.m. when the motorcyclist, riding the bridge highway that connects Hulhumalé to the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge, lost control of his motorcycle, according to police. The highway stretches along the eastern side of Hulhulé Island.

According to the initial statement from the police, the motorcyclist skidded off the road and collided with the fence lining the highway. The injured man was quickly rushed to Hulhumalé Hospital. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was subsequently transferred to the ADK Hospital in Malé, said police.

Police also said they have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the accident.
