Authorities in the Maldives have arrested two Indian nationals on suspicion of smuggling drugs and remanded them in custody for 30 days.
The suspects, identified as Saddam Hussein, 30, and MD Tamanna, 31, were apprehended at Velana International Airport during a customs operation after their actions raised suspicions. Authorities said drugs were found concealed in MD Tamanna’s luggage.
The pair were brought to the Criminal Court on Tuesday, where their detention was extended for 30 days. The court cited evidence provided by police as grounds for their continued custody while the investigation proceeds.
The suspects denied that the drugs belonged to them, claiming the substances had been handed to them by an unidentified individual.
Authorities have not disclosed details about the type or quantity of drugs seized. Investigations are ongoing.
