A foreign national, reportedly a United States citizen, who was apprehended in connection with the assault on staff members at Velana International Airport (VIA), has been conditionally released, according to a spokesperson from the Maldives Police Service.
The incident, which occurred on Tuesday near the check-in counters in the departure hall of VIA, was captured on video and subsequently circulated on social media platforms. The footage shows the passenger engaged in heated verbal exchanges with two airport employees, which then escalated into a physical altercation.
Following the incident, local law enforcement took the individual into custody. However, the Criminal Court has since declined to remand the suspect, opting instead for conditional release. The specifics of these conditions remain undisclosed at this time.
