The United States (US), under the 14th amendment to the Development Objective Grant Agreement (DOAG), will provide the Maldives with US$8.5 million (approximately MVR 131 million) in grant aid as part of the continuing bilateral agreement between the two countries, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed on Monday.
Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sheryna Abdul Samad signed the amendment on behalf of the Maldives, with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Mission Director for Sri Lanka and the Maldives, Gabriel Grau, signing on behalf of the US government.
“The DOAG is a landmark development cooperation agreement signed between the Maldives and the United States to strengthen the technical capacity of the Maldives in managing public finances and bolster the resilience of the country’s economic and democratic governance,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
In recent years there has been a consistent increase in allocations by the US to the Maldives with the current total value of the DOAG now standing at US$45.7 million (approximately MVR 705 million), the Ministry confirmed.
