Renowned Maldivian musician Mohamed Majid, known as Mezzo Mohamed, died on Wednesday at the age of 59, his family confirmed. While the cause of his death has not been officially confirmed, local news outlets have reported that he died of a heart attack.
The news sparked an outpouring of tributes and condolences from the public, senior officials, and prominent figures, including former President Mohamed Nasheed, opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail, and President Mohamed Muizzu. Many in the music industry have also mourned his passing, calling it a significant loss for Maldivian music.
A versatile artist, Mohamed was recognised for his contributions to Maldivian music as a guitarist, drummer, vocalist, and songwriter. He began his career in 1977 at around the age of 10 with Club Cobras, before performing with bands like Cream of Acid, Quick Sand, and Twentieth Century BC. Mohamed rose to prominence with his band Mezzo and later worked with other musicians on various projects.
Over his 48-year career, Mohamed released four albums comprising more than 40 songs. His most popular songs, including Kamana Goathee Aadhanu, Jismu, Visna Visna and Udun Tharithah, became staples of Maldivian music, while his albums Guguri and Maali further cemented his legacy in the industry. Mezzo performed extensively across the Maldives and internationally, with notable appearances in India, Germany, Italy, South Africa, and Seychelles.
In 2010, Mohamed was honoured by the Maldivian government with the National Award of Recognition for his contributions to the performing arts. His song Visna Visna, performed with Mezzo band, made history as the first Dhivehi-language track to air on MTV India.
His most recent televised performance aired on Television Maldives last year.
The late artist’s daughter, Mira Mohamed Majid, is also a well-known singer in the Maldives.
