Long-range lightning detection systems have been deployed for the first time in the Maldives. The systems, installed at the main Velana International Airport (VIA) and Gan International Airport in southern Addu City, will enhance real-time weather monitoring capabilities.
The project was a collaborative effort between the Institute of Electrical Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Science and the Maldives Meteorological Service (Met Office).
According to the Environment Ministry, the newly established long-range systems will connect with regional lightning detection networks. Once integrated, they will provide comprehensive coverage of lightning or thunderstorms across all areas surrounding the Maldives.
The Environment Ministry also announced plans to expand the system further with the implementation of short-range lightning detection systems in the near future. While lightning and thunderstorms significantly threaten critical infrastructure, electric, electronic, and communications equipment are particularly vulnerable.
While lightning-induced disruptions to air and maritime transportation can have far-reaching consequences, the Environment Ministry said that the Met Office gains real-time insights into lightning and thunderstorm patterns by installing these cutting-edge systems.
The accuracy of weather advisories issued by the Met Office, including SIGMET (Significant Meteorological Information) and TREND reports, will receive a significant boost, the Ministry added.
