Maldivian swimmer Aishath Ulya Shaig has shattered her short-course 50-metre freestyle national record for the second time in just one month. Competing at the West Coast Club Night #07 meet hosted by the University of Western Australia, Shaig finished the race with a time of 28.75 seconds.
This achievement follows her previous record-breaking finish in June at the Breakers Big Splash meet in Australia, where she set the bar at 00:28.81. Before Shaig’s dominance, the record belonged to Aminath Sajan, who achieved the feat back in 2016 during the 13th FINA World Swimming Championships with a time of 00:29.81.
Shaig is now gearing up to represent the Maldives at the 2024 Olympics, scheduled to be held between 26 July and 11 August in Paris, France. The Swimming Association of the Maldives received two universal places for swimming at the Olympic Games. Joining Shaig in Paris will be fellow swimmer Mohamed Aan Hussain.
