A 21-year-old man, Mohamed Leevan Abdul Latheef, has died after being seriously injured in a road accident near Dharubaaruge in Malé on Wednesday.

Latheef was admitted to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) after his motorcycle collided with a car at the junction of Bodu Thakurufaanu Magu and Koimala Hingun. He had been on a ventilator for three days before succumbing to his injuries in the early hours of Sunday.

This fatality follows a spate of recent road accidents across the capital region. On Friday morning, a 23-year-old man died in a collision involving a sports car and a motorcycle in Hulhumalé. Another young man remains hospitalised after a separate accident between a car and a motorcycle in Hulhumalé Phase II on Saturday.

According to police statistics, road accidents in the Maldives have surged this year, with 1,907 incidents recorded as of August. The authorities have urged caution among motorists to curb the rising number of fatalities and injuries on the nation’s roads.

The police are investigating all three incidents.
