President Mohamed Muizzu on Sunday appointed Yazmeed Mohamed as a member of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), replacing Mohamed Sameer, the President’s Office said in a statement.

The appointment comes amid speculation that the government is planning to file cases against some Supreme Court judges.

Muizzu dismissed Sameer from the JSC prior to the appointment, in accordance with Article 165 of the Constitution and Section 14(a) of the JSC Act, the statement said. The President made the new appointment under Article 158(h) of the Constitution and Article 3(8) of the JSC Act.

Yazmeed took his oath before the President, with Supreme Court Justice Mohamed Ibrahim administering the oath. Muizzu then presented Yazmeed with the appointment letter at the ceremony.

The JSC, which oversees the judiciary, is currently chaired by Maafushi MP Hussain Riza, a member of the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC). Speaker of Parliament Abdul Rahman Abdullah also sits on the commission. Supreme Court judges are represented by Justice Husnu Al Suood, and the commission includes Attorney General Ahmed Usham.
