Despite objections from the Indian government, Maldivian authorities have granted permission for the Chinese research vessel Xiang Yang Hong 03 to dock at Malé. Currently sailing in the Indo-Java Sea, the vessel previously embarked on a scientific survey mission along the eastern coast of Africa.
The research vessel Xiang Yang Hong 03, which is currently conducting surveys in the region, is expected to arrive in the Maldives on 8 February. Chinese officials maintain the vessel’s sole purpose is scientific research.
Confirming the media reports of Xiang Yang Hong 03’s port call to Malé, the Maldives’ Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Tuesday that “a diplomatic request was made by the Government of China to the Government of Maldives, for the necessary clearances to make a port call, for rotation of personnel and replenishment.” The vessel would not be conducting any research while in the Maldivian waters, the ministry clarified in a press statement.
The Xiang Yang Hong 03 was initially planned for deepwater exploration in the South Indian Ocean in January. The ship sought permission to dock in Colombo, Sri Lanka, but reports suggest the request was denied.
“The Maldives has always been a welcoming destination for vessels of friendly countries, and continues to host both civilian and military vessels making port calls for peaceful purposes,” the foreign ministry said in a statement. “Such port calls not only enhance bilateral ties between the Maldives and its partner countries, but also demonstrate the centuries old tradition of the Maldivian people welcoming vessels from friendly countries.”
The vessel was constructed in 2016, sailing under the flag of China. Its carrying capacity is 1676 tonnes of deadweight (DWT). Its draught is reported to be six metres. The overall length is 99.8 metres, and the width is 17.8 metres.
Beijing sought permission for Research Survey Vessel Xiang Yang Hong 03 to dock in Malé and Colombo for deepwater exploration from 5 January to late May 2024, reports said.
While the Maldives maintains close relations with China, there has been a recent deterioration in its ties with India. Earlier this month, President Muizzu made his inaugural state visit to China. In December, Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef visited China to participate in the ‘China-Indian Ocean Region Forum on Development Cooperation.
