Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL), the flag carrier and largest airline in Azerbaijan, is set to begin flights to the Maldives.
AZAL is expected to operate twice-weekly scheduled flights between Baku, Azerbaijan, and Velana International Airport (VIA) in the Maldives, with flights set to commence to coincide with the peak tourism season in the Maldives.
While Azerbaijan is not a top tourism market for the Maldives, the Ministry of Tourism expects higher tourists arrivals from Azerbaijan due to the introduction of direct flights by the nation’s official flag carrier.
According to the Ministry, as of July this year, 42 airlines from 22 countries operate flights to the Maldives, with 1.1 million tourists having visited between January and July.
