The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) will move forward stronger and more united with former President Mohamed Nasheed and members of The Democrats who have rejoined the party and will defeat the government, party chairperson Fayyaz Ismail said on Monday.

Speaking at a special rally held at Sultan Park in the capital Malé to welcome Nasheed and The Democrats, Fayyaz said he hoped all MDP members and leaders would work together.

“My hope is that we will do this together. Together, we will move forward stronger and united, and defeat this government. We will take this country back. I assure you that I will continue to do my best alongside you,” he said.

The decision of the MDP leaders to welcome back the members who left the party two years ago is a courageous decision for the country and future generations, the opposition leader said.

He added that Nasheed and former party leaders who returned would help win the upcoming local council elections and future elections, and speed up efforts to put the government back on the right track.

Alongside Nasheed, former Deputy Speaker of Parliament Eva Abdulla, together with several other prominent Democrats, rejoined the MDP on Monday night.
