The number of tourists visiting the Maldives increased by 14 percent last month, data from the Ministry of Tourism showed. Around 160,000 tourists visited in July, 20,000 more than the 140,000 recorded in June.
The arrivals increase in July follows a significant decline in the previous two months.
Around 1.1 million tourists visited the Maldives within the first seven months of 2024 — a 9.6 percent increase from the one million tourists that visited over the same period last year.
While the Mohamed Muizzu administration aims to attract over two million tourists to the country by the end of the year, 180,000 tourists will need to visit the Maldives each month to stay on track to reach the target.
The largest number of arrivals was from China with 157,000 tourists. Russia was second with 125,000 tourists. Visitors from the UK are the third largest group of tourists, with 104,000 arrivals recorded thus far.
