An aircraft accident investigation team will be established, independent of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Maldives (CAA) , Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen has said.

The committee will be formed within the ministry, Ameen revealed during a press conference on Wednesday.

“This has to be a very technically capable team that we have to establish. We will set up an aircraft accident investigation committee within the Ministry of Transport within the next three to four months,” he said.

He said that while the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the European Union (EU) audits the CAAM, he was not satisfied with the results of the latest audit.

“When we were last audited, we did not achieve ICAO certification within the approval category we wanted,” he said.

The minister said he was also working with the Attorney General’s Office (AGO) to make necessary changes to the Civil Aviation Act.
