A migrant worker has been arrested for obstructing law enforcement officers and for kicking a vehicle belonging to Maldives Immigration. The suspect was taken into custody during a raid carried out by the immigration authority and the Maldives Police Service (MPS) aimed at identifying and apprehending undocumented migrant workers.

No details have so far been provided on the immigration status of the detained foreign worker.

The Controller General of Immigration, Mohamed Shamaan Waheed, confirmed in a post to X that the migrant worker who obstructed immigration officers is now in custody.

“As soon as possible, as per immigration laws, we will take the strictest action and deport [the migrant worker],” Waheed warned. “Operation to identify undocumented migrant workers will continue without delay and yielding to external pressure.”

As part of an ongoing operation, police and immigration officers continue to apprehend undocumented migrant workers. Over 100 workers were taken into custody during raids in the past week alone.
