President Mohamed Muizzu returned to the capital on Wednesday after completing a state visit to Singapore aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing economic cooperation.
The four-day visit, made at the invitation of Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, included meetings with both Shanmugaratnam and Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, with talks focused on expanding ties in areas such as capacity-building, education, environmental development, and economic investment.
Several memoranda of understanding were signed during the visit, including agreements with the Singapore Cooperation Enterprise, as well as private sector deals on a residence-by-investment scheme and a major solar project.
The Maldivian government signed an agreement with Henley & Partners to develop a Residence by Investment Programme, and another with APM SPV Pvt. Ltd. for a renewable energy initiative called Project Solar City.
The visit coincided with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations. President Muizzu presented a commemorative book to President Shanmugaratnam to mark the occasion and joined in unveiling commemorative stamps.
“This inaugural state visit underscores a renewed commitment to deepening Maldives–Singapore cooperation,” the President’s Office said in a statement.
At the Maldives–Singapore Business Forum on Tuesday, which showcased investment opportunities under his administration’s Vision 2040 economic strategy, Muizzu presented recognition awards to Maldivian and Singaporean businessmen and companies for contributing to the strengthening of commercial ties between the two countries.
The presidential delegation also visited key institutions including the Institute of Technical Education, the Urban Redevelopment Authority, Tuas Port, the Singapore Food Agency, and the Peranakan Museum.
Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed also met with members of the Maldivian diaspora living in Singapore during the trip.
The President’s Office described the visit as “an important step towards strengthening bilateral cooperation across a broad range of sectors.”
