The People’s Majlis approved the appointment of Abdul Haseeb Ismail to the Elections Commission on Tuesday, endorsing him with a unanimous vote of 67 members. Haseeb will succeed current Chairman Fuad Tawfik, whose term is set to expire on 24 November.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu nominated Haseeb, who currently serves as the Assistant Director of the Elections Commission. Previously, Haseeb held the position of Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Islamic Affairs under the former administration but was removed at the request of then-Islamic Minister Dr Ahmed Zahir.
The term of office for members of the Elections Commission is five years, with each member eligible to serve a maximum of two terms.
